Campaign of the Month: January 2011
Honour Among Thieves
The Mine Road is the name given to a series of twisting paths cut through the swamps of Blackwood that connect the major saltworks with Downriver.
Because of the threat of constant flooding, proper roadwork is nonexistent. The unpaved highway snakes along reinforced dikes, and is cut and re-cut with explosives through steep terrain.
Landslides and washouts are a constant threat to drivers on the mine roads.
Most cargo traffic is done by water-based craft, but occasionally trucks and other wheeled vehicles are pressed into service. Some mines and villages are well above sea level and are unreachable by boat or dredger.
The mine road links up with a number of bridges in varying states of repair, including Lockport Bridge.
