Kelleher is a survivor. A veteran of the Unification War, he was the only member of his squad to come out of the conflict in one piece. Later, after he found work as a terraformer, a generator explosion damaged his hearing, but left him otherwise unscathed while the rest of his terraforming crew were torn to shreds.
You’d think this would make him a good luck charm. Quite the opposite. Kelleher’s personal luck has made him a curse to the more superstitious members of his crew, and has resulted in his banishment to The Boiler. His nickname – “Lucky” – is meant to be ironic, as it marks everyone around him as potential collateral damage.
Which is a shame really, because he’s a very nice man, once you get to know him.
