Ask Eddie Gong what he does for a living, and he’ll tell you he’s in “human resources.” It says so right on his business card.
What he’s actually in is human trafficking. Gong is a snakehead, affiliated with any number of smuggling operations that “help” those whose backgrounds and circumstances would otherwise prevent them from immigrating to the Central Planets. Of course, that assistance comes at a heavy price.
In addition, there are many places in the ‘Verse where labour shortages exist. Gong seeks to fill those shortages by any means necessary. Debt bondage is one grey-legal method of doing so – Gong considers it a form of securities trading, with a worker’s labour acting as collateral. Of course, he’s not above the more tried-and-true methods of kidnapping, shanghaiing, or otherwise bushwhacking innocent people into the forced labour market. Many of those are would-be immigrants who thought they were on a path to prosperity. Pity they didn’t read the fine print.
That doesn’t appear on any of his business cards.
