Gear – miner’s helmet, hair pomade, cigarette holder.
To hear Cullen tell it, miners are a lot like cattle. “Sometimes you gotta prod ’em.”
Cullen, mine operator at the Hornsilver Mine, is lean and mean, with a cold eye on the main chance and no sense of humour to speak of.
He’s upwardly mobile, a company man with high hopes that the “good work” he puts in at the Hornsilver Mine will impress company officials, who will reward him with a promotion and a first-class ticket off Regina to the company headquarters.
He’s none too fond of the miners under his watchful eye. He considers them lazy and is not above applying the whip. Whatever’s necessary to get the job done.
Cullen dresses in the fanciest duds he can scrape together in a rough mining camp like Frisco. His mustachio and hair are both greased with a smelly pomade. He masks that odor with cigarettes he smokes in long-stemmed holders. Apparently he thinks that’s what folk do on the Central Planets.
